Angela Kaur had a real impact on the judges when they read about how she made a vital call for a patient, resulting in them being diagnosed with cancer. “She showed a level of care to the Asian community who would have struggled due to language barrier,” says RoE judge and Spotlight Award winner 2022, Nicole Tolkin.

That’s right, when a customer came into the pharmacy clearly distressed, Angela quickly realised they spoke Indian and began conversing. She soon found out the patient had some worrying symptoms, including vomiting, unexplained weight loss, bleeding from the back passage, reflux and heartburn. She quickly informed the pharmacist and referred the patient that very day. It turned out they had cancer, but thanks to Angela’s care the patient was able to undergo a successful surgery sooner rather than later. “Angela demonstrates the outstanding clinical and interpersonal skills that makes community pharmacy a bastion of equity,” says Ade Williams MBE, RoE judge and lead pharmacist at Bedminster Pharmacy.

The patient’s family even came in to thank her later, and she was able to communicate with them again, breaking the language barrier once more to explain the patient’s treatment going forwards and explain the next steps towards recovery. Providing vital reassurance to the whole family. “She has also instilled confidence in our customers, encouraging them with compliance and concordance and by demonstrating empathy she has built fantastic rapport with surgeries, service users and the multidisciplinary healthcare professionals,” explains nominator and pharmacist, Shamila Noreen.
